A Car OS? Top ten makers racing to make it happen
Jul 29, 2007 News
We all know what happens when the biggest of the biggest in automobile manufacturers come together. Something truly exciting gets made. Well, it’s not a great luxury car or the yet-not-so-viable electric car this time. It’s an Operating System (OS) they are busy working on.
To be announced this week, the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry is said to be jointly participating in this project. Estimated to cost about 1 million Yen, a prototype model of the OS is expected to be out by fiscal 2009, and the finished product to be available to you and me five years hence.
Of course, while this is a great idea, it has competitors already, what with BMW, DaimlerChrysler and other European automakers jointly working on developing another next-gen OS by 2008. Moreover, don’t you think too many cooks spoil the broth? We will see. But considering that the number of electronic control devices exceeds 100 in some luxury cars, the Japanese Government’s desperation to get it all rolling as soon as possible is understandable, what say?
