$100 laptop now for $188: One-laptop-per-child-Impossible!

Remember all the hoopla about the $100 one laptop per child concept? Well, as happy as it may sound, the concept might never take off, if the prices of the initially announced for $100 laptop keep rising the way it is. It started at $100, then $130, then $148, $176 and finally a $188. I’m sure it’s got to be one laptop for two children now.

Well the concept did become a rage when it was announced and it is believed that companies and goverments of developing nations had signed up for it in bulk, which of course means that the prices should come down right or atleast be easy to maintain? Unfortunately that’s not the case, and the manufacturer insists that rising nickel and silicon prices and currency fluctuations are some of the factors responsible for it.

They say they’re committed to keeping it from exceeding $200, which itself is a shame, considering it’s twice the announced price, but then again, we can only hope that things don’t get worse right?
